After witnessing unidentified flying objects near his home in Indiana, electrical lineman Roy Neary becomes obsessed with understanding what he saw. Haunted by the recurring image of a mysterious mountain-like shape, he discovers that other witnesses, including Jillian Guiler, are experiencing the same vision. Meanwhile, French scientist Claude Lacombe leads an international investigation into a series of unexplained events that appear to be guiding humanity toward an extraordinary encounter.
