William Friedkin was an American film and television director, producer, and screenwriter who became a leading figure of the New Hollywood era. He achieved major acclaim with The French Connection, which earned him the Academy Award for Best Director, followed by the landmark horror film The Exorcist. His subsequent work included Sorcerer, Cruising, To Live and Die in L.A., Bug, and Killer Joe. Known for working across crime, horror, thriller, and drama, Friedkin continued directing for film, television, and opera until late in his career.
